Released in 1978 where the protagonist (Coring) is a gay beautician, played by Dolphy, the king of comedy. His ex-boyfriend Dennis (Philip Salvador) left him for another woman, whom he impregnated. All of a sudden, Dennis went overseas and left the child to his care. Overwhelmed but left with no choice, Coring looked after the child and acted as a father and mother. Until one day, the kid’s biological mother returns.
The movie tackles the stigma of raising a boy as a homosexual parent, a dysfunctional family. Behind the comedic scenes, there is the underlying theme of how the love between son-father transcends his identity as a homosexual.
2. Ang pagdadalaga ni Maximo Olivares
A masterpiece of Auraeus Solito, the film showcased the Maximo’s (Nathan Lopez) coming-of-age in a whirlwind of romance caught in the middle of a society and family feud. Maxi is a 12-year-old gay who fell in love with the new cop Victor (J.R. Valentin).
The film was able to put a spotlight on the heartbreaking story of a gay falling in love with a straight man. How they were able to bring out the innocence in Maxi’s character gave a different dimension highlighting Maxi’s struggle to come out from her cocoon too early that his wings have been slightly tainted. It was not an anger-ridden gay film but a heartwarming one that pinches your soul.
Jun Robles Lana has shown depth to the life of a transgender. He shuns from the cliché stories depicting a gay’s life mostly focused on their love life. Each transformation on the corpse of Trisha Echevarria (Paolo Ballesteros) represents a certain stage of his life as a transgender, from his childhood until he grew up. Behind the absurdity of the idea itself, transforming a corpse, you gain an in-depth understanding and appreciation of every transgender’s journey.
4. Markova – Comfort Gay
Another Dolphy’s classic that shed a different light on the story of the survivors of World War II. The story in itself is a revelation to a part of the history that was never told. Despite the heavy issue of this film, they have managed to turn this around and end it on a positive note. It showcased the life of the real Markova and how his life has changed after that fateful incident in World War ll.
5. In My Life
Tells the story of how Shirley (Vilma Santos) discovered that her son Noel (John Lloyd Cruz) was having a relationship with his roommate Mark (Luis Manzano). The core of the story is that a mother’s love is unconditional for their children.
An award-winning portrayal of Eddie Garcia as Ramon, in his 80s, who finally decided to come out of the open. In its core, it is a family drama that highlights the importance of family and accepting each other’s flaws and identity.
7. Daybreak
The plot was simple played against great cinematography and performance from the actors Coco Martin and Paolo Rivero. Set in a romantic location in Tagaytay with a heart-wrenching soundtrack, it highlighted all the emotions both lovers felt as they spend their last day together.
